Why this is the one most people book

The 15-yard sits at the point where capacity and access stop fighting each other. It holds enough for a serious renovation or a multi-room cleanout, and it still fits on a normal residential driveway without blocking the garage or spilling into the street. That combination is why it is the size we put more of on the road than any other.

It is also the size we point people to when they describe a job and then say "but I'm not sure". Being slightly over-sized costs a modest amount. Being under-sized costs a second delivery, a second haul and a second rental period.

Roofing tear-offs

Roofing is the job people most often book the 15-yard for, and it is the one where weight matters more than volume. It includes 1.5 tons of disposal weight, which is roughly ten squares of single-layer architectural shingles at about 300 pounds a square, or about thirteen squares of lighter 3-tab. Most full roofs go past that and pay the overage by weight, so run the roofing calculator before you book and it will show the expected overage. A roof that has been shingled over twice weighs roughly what you would expect two roofs to weigh.

Placement

The 15-yard fits most residential driveways, but "most" is not "all". Before delivery day, have a look at the spot with fresh eyes: is there anything overhead — branches, wires, a basketball hoop? Is there room for the truck to back straight in? Will a car need to get past it for a week?

Put anything the driver should know in the placement notes when you book. Low wires, a soft shoulder, a gate code, "leave room to get the car out" — it all helps, and it is far easier to deal with before the container is on the ground than after.

Street placement is possible in many towns but needs the town's permission. Wherever it sits, the state fire code requires a fire department permit for any dumpster over 6 cubic yards left overnight, and some towns add a permit of their own, even on a driveway; the permit guide has each town's rule. Obtaining any permit is the customer's responsibility. The driveway is simpler wherever it is an option.

15-yard or 20-yard?

If you are clearing an entire house, taking on a large demolition, or working through a multi-story tear-off, step up to the 20-yard for the extra allowance. For a single large renovation or two or three rooms, the 15-yard is the right tool, and it holds most roofs too, with the overage billed by weight. If the job is one room and one container's worth of furniture, the 12-yard will save you a little.
