Dumpster Permits by Town

What you need for a dumpster on your driveway or on the street, in each of the 65 Massachusetts towns we serve.

On your driveway: in 35 of the 65 towns we serve, the only paperwork is the fire department's dumpster permit.

In 26 towns the town wants its own permit too, usually from the Board of Health: Andover, Arlington, Ashland, Belmont, Chelmsford, Haverhill, Hopedale, Hudson, Lexington, Lowell, Lynnfield, Maynard, Melrose, Mendon, Methuen, Milford, Natick, North Andover, Reading, Saugus, Stoneham, Upton, Wakefield, Watertown, Weston, Winchester.

In Dracut, Framingham, Tewksbury and Tyngsborough the Board of Health may want its own permit or permission; see the town's row.

On the street: you need the town's permission as well as the fire permit, and a few towns don't allow a dumpster there at all.

Checked Sep 28–29, 2026. Every town below links to its own rule.

Why every rental needs a fire department permit

The state fire code (527 CMR 1.00) requires a permit from the local fire department for any dumpster over 6 cubic yards, on a private driveway too, unless it is delivered and removed on the same business day. Every size we rent is 10 yards or more and stays at least three days, so every rental needs one.

Getting the permits is the customer's responsibility. In Lynnfield and Watertown the DPW permit also needs a bond, so call us before booking there. We read every town rule below on the town's own website, bylaws or regulations, and each entry links to its source with the date we checked it. Rules change, so confirm with the town before delivery day.

Getting the permits

  1. Apply to your fire department for the dumpster permit. Several take the application online.
  2. Find your town below. If the town wants its own permit too, its row names it.
  3. Apply before delivery day. Methuen's Board of Health permit must be obtained at least three business days before delivery, and Reading's must be issued at least five business days before delivery; most towns publish no lead time.
  4. Where a form asks for the dumpster company, use SDC Container LLC, 617-459-7536. Our dumpsters are 10, 12, 15 and 20 cubic yards.

A driveway avoids the street permit and protects the road. If yours is tight, the 10-yard dumpster is made for tight driveways, and you can describe the spot in the placement notes when you book.

Dumpster permit questions

Do I need a permit for a dumpster on my own driveway in Massachusetts?

Yes, and in 35 of the 65 towns we serve it is just one: the fire department's dumpster permit. The Massachusetts fire code requires it for any dumpster over 6 cubic yards, even on private property, unless it is delivered and removed on the same business day, and every size we rent is 10 yards or more. 26 of the 65 towns also require a permit of their own, usually from the Board of Health, and in Dracut, Framingham, Tewksbury and Tyngsborough the Board of Health may want its own permit or permission.

Who gets the dumpster permit, me or the dumpster company?

You do. Getting the permits is the customer's responsibility. In Lynnfield and Watertown the DPW permit also needs a bond, so call us before booking there. Where a form asks for the dumpster company, use SDC Container LLC, 617-459-7536. Our dumpsters are 10, 12, 15 and 20 cubic yards.

Can a dumpster go on the street?

Almost every town requires permission for a dumpster on a street or sidewalk, usually from public works, the police or the select board, and some, including Arlington, Berlin, Danvers, Mendon, Peabody and Watertown, do not allow one there at all. The fire department permit applies wherever the dumpster sits. A driveway avoids the street permit and protects the road surface, so use one where it fits.

How far ahead should I apply for a dumpster permit?

As early as you can. Methuen's Board of Health permit must be obtained at least three business days before delivery, and Reading's must be issued at least five business days before delivery. Most towns publish no lead time, so ask the fire department and any other department listed for your town.

This guide is general information, not legal advice. Town rules change; the source link on each entry is the authority. See the FAQ for placement and what can go in the dumpster.
